Local firm embraces greeninitiatives, introduces EVs

Mike Appel and Gatto Limited, a local automotive franchise dealer, has unveiled plans to embrace green initiatives by introducing electric vehicle (EVs) on the local market this year, starting with trucks and small vehicles. The firm says it started researching in 2014 on the prospects of rolling out the vehicles. Nation Publication Limited Business Editor CHIKONDI CHIYEMBEKEZA caught up with the firm’s  group sales manager Lawrence Likoswe to talk about the project and other issues. Excerpts:

We understand the firm is embracing green initiatives through the introduction of electric vehicles. Would you elaborate on this project, including the timeline for rolling out EVs on the Malawi market?

Mike Appel and Gatto Limited is committed to environmental sustainability and also providing solutions that will also impact the living cost of Malawians. As such, this is a project that we have been working on for the last two years we are embracing green initiatives by introducing commercial electric vehicles (EVs) to the Malawi market in the 1.5 tonne and four tonne category. We plan to roll out EVs within this year as we already have them available and we are now currently working on partnerships to ensure that charging infrastructure is in place.

What is the expectation on the response on the market in view of the fact that this is a new initiative in Malawi?

: We already have positive responses from environmentally conscious customers who appreciate the benefits of EVs such as reduced emissions and lower operating costs. By venturing into the EV market, it aligns with the company’s commitment to forward thinking, growth and environmental responsibility. By promoting cleaner transportation options, they contribute to a greener future and will also in turn help to reduce the cost of goods in the overall market.
